| Current progress on the project is that the chassis is complete, except for the detailing that can only be completed once the bodyshell has been installed, such as fuel filler pipes, the exhausts and final wiring details. The next task is painting the bodyshell, which gives me nightmares just thinking about the amount of work done so far on the bodyshell that could be ruined with a careless paint job! After a bit of research, again with help from GPMA members, I sourced the correct paint colours from a large Halfords outlet (a UK automotive parts supplier), who now do one-off paint mixing into aerosols or touch up cans. The reference colours for the Shell car are Datsun 905 Red and Volkswagen LB1A Shellgelb. The latest 4 pictures of the model with the bodyshell in primer (taken by Steve Cox at my local model club, who owns a half decent digital camera!) are shown below, with comparison shots of the bodyshell next to an unmodified Tamiya 962C bodyshell. | ||||||
| I may use the white decals on the sheet for the various white areas, but the potential for red/yellow colours underneath to show through may point me towards towards having a go at painting the bodyshell in white, followed by masking off for the yellow, then the red and finally the black.
The shell has been primed using plastic primer which will prevent any reaction from the paint being used which is cellulose based. The paints used in the build up so far range from Halfords automotive paints (Satin & Matt black, aluminium, Volkswagen Silver grey) through Humbrol and Tamiya enamels, to metallic varnishes. There is still plenty to do before the model is finished, but it is getting there! What has been used so far, aside from my time, has been one Tamiya 962C kit, one Tamiya 956 kit, parts of one Hasegawa 962C kit and one decal sheet. The remnants from these 3 kits will build up into a kurbside kit of either a 956 or 962. All in all, the cost will have been about £25, excluding the paint. The project has been very enjoyable so far, even if it has slowed down the production rate of models and I hope this helps any budding Shell 962 modellers. All I would ask is that if anyone wishes to use the information commercially, a request to me would be appreciated. All the best, Mark Williams |
